Arsenal were left reeling from the news of Danny Welbeck’s extended stay on the sidelines, after the decision was made for the player to go under the knife. The Englishman was said to be on the mend from a knee injury suffered last April, with Wenger hopeful the player would return to training after this weekend’s international break.

Welbeck had reportedly increased his training workload in the hope of stepping up his rehabilitation, but when the cartilage in his knee didn’t respond as well as the medical staff hoped, the decision was made to correct the problem (via Arsenal.com).

Welbeck will now be out for a matter months, in what will come as a big blow to the club. Danny was undoubtedly in Wenger plans, particularly considering that the boss opted against bringing in another forward on deadline day.

It was expected that Welbeck would return and provide cover and competition for Giroud and Walcott in the centre forward position, thus making up the numbers in the squad in the event of injury or suspension or tactical changes. Wenger may now feel his attacking corps is a bit light now, so this news is a huge loss for Arsenal.

Welbeck was beginning to make strides as a centre striker last season as well, so he is a huge loss from a pure footballing aspect. He is a bit of hybrid between Giroud and Walcott; similar in strength and physicality to the former, and similar in pace and movement to the latter.

He is a real handful with his pace and strength, and is especially dangerous when running in behind the back line. He silenced all critics when he bagged his first career hat trick with three exquisitely taken goals against Galatasaray, with his goal tally at United previously maligned despite the player being cast out wide most of the time .

He began to prove last year that he has the makings of a natural centre forward. Surely he would have hoped to improve on last season’s 8 goal tally this time around, so this setback must be disappointing for Danny.

Christmas has been earmarked as a possible return time for Danny, and he could still play a big part for Arsenal over the second half of the season. Let’s wish him a speedy recovery and hope Danny can return to form top form soon.
