Nacho Monreal signed for Arsenal in January 2013, because Wenger needed cover for the injury prone first-choice left-back Kieran Gibbs.

However, Monreal has proved he can be so much more than just a squad player.

The Spaniard’s early performances were decent enough but it was clear he needed time to settle and adjust to the Premier League.

He provided an assist on Santi Cazorla a few games into his Arsenal career and he showed he can cross a ball more competently than Kieran Gibbs. Monreal’s chances in the first team were minimal though with Gibbs being preferred as first choice.

Monreal started the heavy defeats against Manchester City (5-3) and Liverpool (1-5) with the Spaniard being substituted for Gibbs at Anfield after 61 minutes.

Arsenal fans wouldn’t be blamed for doubting whether Monreal has what it takes to cut it in the Premier League. His early performances were littered with rash challenges and he appeared to be beaten down the line far too easily time and time again.

Last season saw another opportunity for Monreal to hold down a first-choice spot. Kieran Gibbs started the 0-2 defeat away at Southampton and that proved to be his last as undisputed first-choice left-back. Monreal’s run in the first team coincided with the excellent form Arsenal showed towards the back end of last season and the Spaniard’s form went from strength to strength.

Nacho Monreal has arguably been Arsenal’s most consistent performer since the turn of the year. He shows maturity in defence by timing his challenges precisely, always being in the right position and getting forward to help the team. Kieran Gibbs cuts a forlorn figure on the bench as he watches on at Monreal game after game and there’s no sign of his form dipping anytime soon.

Long may it continue.

I am pleased that at last he is getting the praise he deserves. I have seen him grow week in week out and your article sums it up spot on.He has worked hard kept his nose clean and is a credit to Arsenal and the premier league.
