Arsenal great Theirry Henry says his former club can challenge for both the Premier League and Champions Leagus titles, so long as they sign Karim Benzema. The £45m-rated Real Madrid ace has been linked with a move to the Emirates for majority of the summer (and summers prior as well), with Wenger known to be an admirer of the player.

Henry says the optimism in the Arsenal camp is high at the moment, and believes that if the squad can stay fit they can challenge for the title. Henry has also risked adding fuel to the fire in his growing spat (of sorts) with Olivier Giroud. Henry previously had harsh words for his compatriot, asserting that he is not the man to fire Arsenal to the title.

Speaking to Talk Sport as reported by the Independent, Henry had this to say:

“I always say it’s their year but there is a genuine buzz around the place right now. I think they can challenge this year for real if they injury free.”

“Giroud alone as a striker there – you can’t win the league, you need another type of striker. I think Giroud is doing really well – he went on to score 14 goals in 18 games, that’s amazing.”

“But sometimes you need a different type of striker and I think that if they can get Benzema, suddenly they are a real title contender and also in the Champions League.”

Henry is spot on. Karim Benzema is exactly the kind of player to instantly take Arsenal to the next level. An experience and clinical goal scorer, with winning pedigree and proven goal record. Benzema is used to the pressures of a long and demanding campaign, and is always present in the big matches.

The same can’t always be said of Arsenal’s current attacking options, so Henry has a point.

He would easily get 25 to 30 goals per season in this side, with the kind of service his old mate Mesut Ozil will offer him. Not to mention Santi, Alexis, Theo, and the rest of the attacking corpse and Benzema would have the dream job of simply applying the finish.

That he can surely do, and with his knack for setting up goals as well, he is well and truly the total package.

Thierry of course knows a thing or two about leading a side to a trophy, having spearheaded Arsenal to several trophies during his time at the club. If the club’s all time leading goal scorer endorses a certain striker, it usually means it is worth a shout.
