3 January replacements for crocked Coquelin

Emery claims Arsenal were in decline

Arsenal have been hit with yet more bad injury news as Arsene Wenger confirmed that midfielder Francis Coquelin is set for a spell on the sidelines.

The Frenchman was forced off with a hamstring problem and the Gunners boss has confirmed that he could miss around a month.

Whilst Wenger could not confirm an exact time frame he was prepared to hazard an initial guess at between three and four weeks, before getting a more detailed return date after a scan.

Losing Coquelin only adds to the Gunners’ problems, with Spain international Santi Cazorla already out for a lengthy period and Egyptian Mohamed Elneny away in international duty at the African Cup of Nations.

With that in mind, would it be beneficial for Wenger to step into the January market in search for someone to bolster his midfield ranks?

January is a dangerous time to bring in players, prices are inflated and there is next to no time for an incoming player to settle in the side.

However, there comes a time when investment is necessary, so, here are THREE midfielders Wenger could get his hands on in January…

Morgan Schneiderlin

The Manchester United midfielder looks to be on his way out of Old Trafford this month, having been linked with both Everton and West Brom.

However, the France international was reportedly a target for Arsene Wenger before making the move to Manchester and, whilst his United move has not gone to plan, his talent is undeniable.

Julian Weigl

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder has been a mainstay for the Bundesliga side this season, and would be a magnificent addition to the Arsenal squad.

The fact that the 21-year-old is being linked with Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona is a testament to his talent, but also means the Gunners could face a battle should they go in for him, so why not move quickly this month?

Jack Wilshere

Admittedly a cheeky inclusion, but the England international has been impressing on the south coast and offers a quick fix to Wenger’s problems.

The on-loan midfielder has been playing further forward for the Cherries but will be comfortable sitting a little deeper should he return to The Emirates.
