3 reasons Arsenal must hijack Man United’s move for Virgil van Dijk

After recent performances, you would forgive Arsenal fans for questioning Shkodran Mustafi’s capability.

In fact both Laurent Koscielny and Mustafi have been poor of late. The pair conceded twice against PSG and were let off in the end by a profligate Cavani.

Before the international break, it was Koscielny who left a dangling leg for Dembele to tumble over and win Sp*rs a penalty in the North London derby.

Koscielny, who looks to be on the verge of signing a new deal, is without doubt a top class centre-back. However the jury is out on whether as a pair, the two will be a ‘top drawer’ partnership.

Of course, it’s still early days in Mustafi’s Arsenal career and there can be no doubt that the German needs more time to properly settle himself but if he doesn’t show at least some promising signs, Arsene Wenger may be forced into the market for another central defender.

Over at Southampton, Virgil Van Dijk, who has been linked with a move to Premier League rivals Man United,  is making a name for himself as one of the best central defenders in the league. Here’s 3 reasons why Wenger should gazump Jose Mouriho and sign the Dutchman instead of the Red Devils…

Technical ability

Despite his great size, Van Dijk has wonderful technique on the ball and is capable of launching some delightful long passes.

The 25-year-old has a great eye for reading the game and can be seen as a natural leader of his team. Van Dijk constantly communicates with his team-mates, keeping them focused and organised.

He’s highly sought after

Van Dijk has all the tools at his disposal and time on his side to become one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

The Saints defender, together with team-mate Jose Fonte, have attracted interest from a number of the Premier League’s elite including Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Wenger should capitalise on any opportunity to sign the centre-back before it’s too late.

He’s young AND experienced

At 25-years-old, Van Dijk has a long career ahead of him. Neither Laurent Koscielny, 31, or Per Mertesacker, 32, have many years ahead of them.

If the Gunners were to swoop in with a substantial offer for the defender, Southampton would struggle to hold on to him. And Arsenal would operate a top class player for years to come.
