5 greatest strikers in Arsenal history- do you agree?

With goals a problem for our forwards at the moment, I had a look back at some of our great strikers of old to remind Gooners of some better times in front of the net.

There’s been plenty of talented forwards who have worn the famous shirt over the years, but here are my top five strikers to ever play for us. Marouane Chamakh and Nicolas Bendtner just miss out…

Thierry Henry

The undoubted number one on this list is not just Arsenal’s greatest ever striker, but arguably the greatest in the Premier League as well: Thierry Henry, who to this day remains the Gunners record top goal scorer.

Signed from Juventus as a leftwinger for 11m in 1999, the Frenchman became one of the worlds best players under Arsene Wenger, scoring 228 goals in 377 games in his Gunners career. He was Arsenal’s hero during our most successful period under in the modern game in the early 2000’s and goes down as a true football legend for his iconic style of play which had a lethal mix of trickery, searing speed, skill and the ability to score wonder goals. What Gooners would give to have a player of his talent leading the line now.

Dennis Bergkamp

Few players are – or ever will be – blessed with the style, grace and sheer talent that Dennis Bergkamp had. The Dutchman was an almost freak of nature in the football world, able to glide his way past players and score goals so effortlessly he made it look easy. He bagged 87 goals in 315 appearances during his trophy-laden eleven year stay and scored some of best goals the club will ever see. He comes a very close second to the iconic Thierry Henry in the competition for the greatest striker to ever play for the club.

In an era of arrogant and egotistical football stars who are falling out of touch with the fans, Bergkamp was an ordinary man, capable of extraordinary things and let his football do the talking rather than his money.

Ian Wright

Wrighty was the Gunners record scorer with 185 goals in 221 appearances until Thierry Henry came along, and the Englishman goes down as a Gunners legend for his part in firing us to plenty of silverware including the Premier League title, both major domestic trophies, and the European Cup Winners Cup.

He was a tenacious fox in the box striker who prolific against any opponent he played against, but it was his larger than life personality and cheeky chappie persona that made fans of all clubs love him. In today’s inflated transfer market, it’s crazy to think he cost just £2.5m from Palace when he signed for us 1991.

Cliff Bastin

The younger generation of Gunners may be unfamiliar with Cliff Bastin, but until Ian Wright broke his record, he was the club’s top scorer with 178 goals scored in just 395 games and definitely deserves a place on this list.

He was the the club’s talisman during the First Division era in the 1930’s and 40’s and fired us to five titles during his time at the club who he signed for at just 17. Strange to think nowadays, but his football career was cut short in his peak by military service during the outbreak of World War Two aged just 27. If he was around today, he would be a superstar, there’s no doubt about that.

Charlie George

George is the only striker on this list who didn’t reach 100 goals for the club, but still makes this list for his 49 goals in 179 appearances and for being the forward who fired the Gunners to their first ever league and cup double. He scored the winner against Liverpool in the 1971 FA Cup final and was a superb servant for the club who was feared by opposition defences.

It’s said that he is one of Alexis Sanchez’s favourite players in the Gunners history and that he watches old videos of him to improve his already exceptional game.
