5 things we learned from Swansea v Arsenal

Arsene Wenger had wanted Boadu at the Emirates

This Saturday saw Arsenal visit the Liberty Stadium in Wales to play Paul Clement’s new Swansea side. After a slow and nervy start from the Gunners, Arsene Wenger’s men suddenly sparked into life when the man in form, Oliver Giroud, netted once again to get his side off the mark.

Once the visitors took the lead, it was evident the game was only going to go one way. Unluckily for the Swans, the next two they conceded in the game were own goals, after brilliant build-up play from Nigerian Alex Iwobi. The game was topped off with a stunning finish from arguably Arsenal’s best player on the day, Alexis Sanchez.

The 4-0 scoreline was a fair result based on Arsenal’s dominance in the match, doubling Swansea’s shots on target whilst having 57% possession of the ball.

In the ninety-minutes, we learned many things about Arsenal, here are five concepts we saw in the performance.. Do you agree? What did you learn about the Arsenal side in Wales?

Arsenal’s fire power

One thing that was evident in Arsenal’s display against the Welsh club was their dominance in the attacking third of the pitch. It seems as if Arsene Wenger has goals all around his team, including joint top-scorer in the Premier League this season, Alexis Sanchez, who got himself on the score-sheet yet again in Wales.

Scoring four goals away to Swansea represents a brilliant performance by the Gunners, making them the second highest goalscorers in the Premier League with forty-eight goals, just a single goal behind Liverpool.

We can trust Giroud

Arsenal’s French target man yet again scored the goal to get his side off the mark and go on to annihilate Swansea on their own patch. His goal at the Liberty was the thirty year old’s eleventh goal, in his last nine starts.

Oliver Giroud is often criticised for not being a striker who can lead Arsenal to a Premier League title, but maybe its time to believe he can. Not only does the centre-forward score goals, the Frenchman holds-up the ball brilliantly for his teammates, as well as getting his fair share of assists.

Alex Iwobi’s confidence

Unfortunately for the young Nigerian, both of his efforts which resulted in goals for Arsenal on Saturday were officially given as own goals for both Jack Cork and Kyle Naugton respectively. Disappointing news for the Arsenal youngster, but no so disappointing for Arsene Wenger, who is witnessing his youth prospect turn into a confident first-team player, every time he steps on the pitch.

The confidence the Arsenal manager puts in his youngster has benefited the skillful winger hugely, playing at the top of his game and keeping other first-team players out of the side as a result of his impressive performances.

Gabriel is versatile

Arsenal’s Brazilian defender is traditionally a centre-back, with all the traits to play the position well, but as fans saw at the Liberty on Saturday, the twenty-six year old can definitely do a job at full-back if needed due to Arsenal’s frequent injury problems.

With Arsenal’s main right-back, Hector Bellerin, currently on the sidelines injured, it looks likely that Gabriel will continue to play in the full-back position for the next few games. It will be pleasing for Arsene Wenger to know he can use the Brazilian out wide if needed in the future.

Centre-back partnership

Arsenal’s centre-halves, Laurent Koscienly and Shkodran Mustafi have formed a solid partnership at the heart of the Gooners defence. Both players are ball-playing defenders, who have the confidence to play the ball out from the back rather than going long hopelessly, which is Arsene Wenger’s style of football.

The North London side are yet to lose a Premier League game when the German and Frenchman are alongside eachother, and its clear why based on their performance against Swansea last weekend. The players have a great understanding, communicating constantly, whilst matching each others intelligence and bravery.

Another clean sheet for Arsenal with these two players at the spine of the side. Arsene Wenger will be hoping they both keep fit for the long season ahead.
