5 things we learnt from Arsenal’s defeat to Bayern Munich

Arsenal suffered a huge Champions League defeat last night in the hands of Bayern Munich, whom many consider the favourites for the competition outright.

An attacking master-class from the German hosts left Arsenal pretty helpless, as they fell to a 5-1 defeat that leaves them on the brink of early elimination. The Gunners must now win their final two matches and must beat Olympiakos by two-goals in the final group game.

On top of this, Arsenal will be eliminated if Olympiakos get anything from their next group-game against Bayern Munich. Given the Greek side’s recent form, this is a pretty big possibility.

Whilst an early-exit would be disappointing, Arsenal supporters learnt some valuable lessons from the defeat to Bayern Munich which @DanGaleaStJohn has identified here.

These lessons could be valuable heading into a crucial North London derby at the weekend, where Arsenal can make it six Premier League victories in a row!

Injuries have cost us

While Bayern clearly outclassed us, our game plan was limited to the players at our disposal. While Giroud had a pretty good game, the pace of Walcott might have been a big bonus, especially in the first half.

If we had a full-strength squad at our disposal, the result could have been entirely different- as the score-line doesn’t show that Arsenal had numerous chances and look threatening going forward!

The second-half was much better

We may still have lost the second half 2-1, but it was a much better Arsenal side that showed up. Crisp passing and movement opened up Bayern’s defence a number of times. Our finishing was found wanting, especially Cazorla’s, however, Giroud scored a very well taken volley.

It showed we can create chances and score against one of the most solid sides in European football- so there’s plenty to be positive about!

Ozil and Coquelin shone

Ozil does turn up for big matches. The scoreline will take probably take away any credit that he is due, but Bayern struggled to contain him. His passing and ball control were a beauty to watch.

Coquelin also gave his heart and played with a passion that is not so easily found nowadays. This pair will be crucial moving forward!

Still a slim chance of qualification

Olympiakos’ late winner against Zagreb is a blow, but Arsenal still need to win their remaining two games to qualify. The away game in Greece, however, must be won by a goal margin of at least 2.

The trip to Greece will likely be a winner-takes-all match and Arsenal have a poor record away at the Greek side but it’s still in our hands.

The defeat wasn’t the same as big losses in the past

5-1 against Liverpool, 6-0 against Chelsea and 6-3 at Manchester City, but the score in the Bayern loss tells a different story.

Arsenal were against the best team in the world right now. 10 players are injured, and some decisions went against them. Not to say that Bayern did not deserve the win, but Arsenal can still take many positives from tonight.
