Arsenal are flying high in the league at the moment. They have for the last few seasons been rebuilt and now with a young squad, they are looking to reclaim the glory from Manchester City, Liverpool and other top flyers of recent years. Currently, they are the subject of good UK betting offers which is a sign of how well they are doing.
When it comes to how this squad stacks up with the legends of the past, well time will tell on that one. With this in mind, let’s look at the great Arsenal players of the past.
1 Thierry Henry
When the Frenchman signed for Arsenal he was thought to be a bit of a misfit. Wenger signed him in 1999 moving him to a forward position. At first, Henry struggled to fit the role, but legend has it that Wenger said to ask himself how he could help the team. From here he quickly progressed into a formidable player.
He was a complete player. He won four golden boots during his time with Arsenal, became their all time leading goal scorer and led them to a Champions League final. He joined a misfit and left as one of the greatest players of all time.
2 Alex James
Alex James played in the Herbert Chapman era, one of the greatest innovative managers the game has ever known. Chapman was the first to play with a back three rather than a back two, and arguably the first to use a player in a midfield general type of role, and that player was James. Always one step ahead, he could pass the ball well, had excellent control, and even better vision. He is still spoken of today which should tell you something about how great this player was.
3 Pat Jennings
Irish goalkeeper Pat Jennings was not known for pulling off spectacular saves, but instead could read the play and somehow be standing in just the right place to make the save. He is one of the best ever shot stoppers ever to have lived and is revered by Arsenal fans and Spurs fans who he had played for previously.
4 Liam Brady
Irishman Liam Brady had a sweet left foot and was blessed with natural talent. He had superb vision and could bend the ball as if he had grown up in Rio de Janeiro. Through his time with Arsenal, he would win the FA Cup in 1979 and nearly everything positive Arsenal did during his time with them, came from his genius.
5 Dennis Bergkamp
The Dutchman may not have netted game in game out but his skill and quick thinking were unmistakable. He could pick out a shot that few players could even see, and at one time three of the four goals featured on Match of the Day goal of the month were his.
Bergkamp is a legend and rightly so.
6 Tony Adams
Adams spent his 19 year career with Arsenal. He is revered in football circles for being a brilliant defender, reader of the game, and a battler. George Graham built his title winning back four around Adams when he was just 21.
After battling addiction, Adams would return and continue playing at both domestic and international levels. There is a statue of him outside the Emirates of his title winning goal celebration. The man is a football legend.
