Arsenal manager  Mikel Arteta was excited about his side’s win, describing it as a “step forward” in his team’s progress.

THE LOWDOWN: A STATEMENT WIN

A Gabriel Magalhaes goal was enough for Arsenal to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. It was an important win for the Gunners after Manchester City leapfrogged them into top spot on Saturday.

The scoreline didn’t suggest what transpired on the pitch with Arsenal dominating the encounter from start to finish. The goals could have been more but they will certainly take the points.

Chelsea became the third top-four challenger Arsenal will beat this season after wins over Liverpool and fierce rivals Tottenham.

THE LATEST: “STEP FORWARD”

Mikel Arteta believes the win over Chelsea is a “step forward” for his side.

The Spaniard went on to add that the win and performance against the Blues will increase his side’s confidence going into other games.

“It’s another step forward,” the gaffer said after the final whistle.

“To prove ourselves that we can do it, that we can play at that level against these sorts of players and teams, And Hopefully they will have more belief.

“I think we are a really young team but today we played like a mature team, we use the right words. Composure, it’s determination, it’s quality, it’s courage to do it in these scenarios, and that’s the steps we have to take as a team, and today we have taken that step.”

It is the third season in a row that Arsenal supporters have left the Bridge in joyous mood and Arteta believes they brought the energy needed for the win once again.

“They were absolutely brilliant again today, they’ve been phenomenal at home, away – around the place, the energy that they have created has transformed the team, I think.

“We are really pleased for them, really pleased for the team and especially the players, to play the way they have done today against this opponent deserves a lot of credit.”

The victory took Arsenal back to the summit of the Premier League, after 13 games played, and increased the lead over Chelsea to 13 points.

THE VERDICT: MORE CONFIDENCE

Glad to see Arsenal build on their impressive away form in the Premier League this season against the Blues. When a win of this magnitude comes at the home of a rival and a top-four challenger, it makes it all the more commendable.

With just a Premier League game left before the world cup break, Arsenal and Arteta can be proud of what they have done this season and that should help the team approach other games going forward with much confidence.
