Mikel Arteta has shed more light on Arsenal’s January business, speaking about the impacts of the club’s newest recruits.

THE LOWDOWN: GREAT START

Halfway through the Premier League season, Arsenal have found themselves in an improved position compared to last season, much to the surprise of many.

At this stage last term, the Gunners were in fourth position with 35 points – 15 less than their current tally at the moment. It goes to show the incredible work they have been put in this term.

Currently, the Gunners hold a five-point advantage over Manchester City and there’s still a long way to go in the season.

THE LATEST: SIGNINGS’ IMPACT

Leandro Trossard and Jakub Kiwior have been added to the Arsenal squad this January and the former made a mark in Arsenal’s win over Manchester United.

Reflecting on that moment, Arteta said: “That’s what I like. I see a player that is willing to make things happen and he is especially composed in the final third and is something we needed to add to the team.

“Straight away he had a beautiful impact on the team to help us to win.”

Meanwhile, when questioned about Jakub, Mikel said: “We’ve been with three central defenders for the first part of the season which is very short, and we’ve been lucky with injuries. We needed to recruit in that position and we’ve done it.

“Jakub plays different roles and is a versatile player, and he’s going to strengthen the team. If anything else is available that can make us better, we’ll look at it.

“We need some more cover in midfield ideally if we can, but in this market, it is pretty complicated to do that. As I always say, the most important thing is that we get the performances and the time on the pitch that we need with the players that we have available today that are already really good.”

THE VERDICT: QUALITY ADDITIONS

Both players have come in to address key areas in the Arsenal set up. Trossard is expected to provide cover in the attacking areas until the return of Gabriel Jesus, while Kiwior will add to the short list of central defenders at the club.
