In a surprising revelation, Arsenal star Ben White has disclosed that none of his family are interested in football.

THE LOWDOWN: INTRIGUING BACKGROUND

It is always interesting to step off the pitch for a bit and take a look at the backstory of our favourite players. For most of them, their passion for football was either inspired by family or they at least got support in that regard. It was not the case with Ben White.

For someone who is one of English football’s most expensive ever players, it is interesting to think that he never grew up liking football.

In an eye-catching interview last year, White spoke about his strange relationship with football, admitting that he barely ever watches football. His comments sparked some debate when he mentioned that he had never watched club legend Patrick Vieira play, after taking up his previously worn No.4 jersey.

A recent interview has shed more light on White’s background and given the latest admission, we can now understand why he was so nonchalant about the sport while growing up.

THE LATEST: SURPRISE REVELATION

Ben White has now detailed a possible explanation as to why he barely watched games, explaining that he was not exposed at all to football while growing up.

“It’s weird because my family don’t like football. They’ve never played it. Dad hates it. He would never, ever watch a game,” White told Amazon Prime Video.

The first person who got him into football was a client of his mum’s hairdressing business.

“It was actually someone who my mum used to cut hair for. She would come out in the garden with me and she would get in goal and I would boot the ball at her. That’s where it all started, really,” he said. I don’t think I was ever talented, like ‘special’. I’ve just worked so much harder than everyone else.”

THE VERDICT: WORKED OUT WELL

When you think about Ben White, you think about hardwork and the fact that he admitted he wasn’t ‘talented’ probably pushed him to work harder than the average kid.

White started Arsenal’s opening game of the Premier League at right-back in the absence of Takehiro Tomiyasu. He has also been deployed in a defensive midfield role by former club Brighton. He played pn the right a couple of times for Arsenal last season while William Saliba has offered an additional central option for manager Mikel Arteta.

Today, White is also an England international so we can say it worked out just fine for him.
