Brazil named their squad for the next set of international friendlies and some decisions were made which could be beneficial to Mikel Arteta and Arsenal.

THE LOWDOWN: BRAZILIAN IMPACT

The Brazil contingent grew a bit this summer after the arrival of Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City. Before his signing, Arsenal had Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Magalhaes and Marquinhos who joined up before the summer window was opened.

The numbers have been impactful as the Gunners stay top of the Premier League log after six games. All Gabriels have played in every single league game for Mikel Arteta and their role in the team can’t be underestimated. And just recently, Marquinhos, who was called up to the U20 national team, made his debut for the club in the Europa League.

In terms of measurable impact, the three Brazilians have either scored or assisted 12 out of 16 goals Arsenal have scored in all competitions this season.

THE LATEST: OMISSIONS

Brazil manager Tite omitted three Arsenal players from his squad for this month’s international friendlies against Ghana and Tunisia ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.

Tite has since explained his decision to drop Jesus from the squad, saying “Gabriel Jesus, specifically, is having a great time and in contention,” he said.

“Absolutely, yes. These call-ups serve as opportunities for others. As well as others in this same context.

“Regarding the number of attackers. Football is creation and scoring, and defensive solidity. If you run away from these characteristics, you will lose. This balance point is very difficult in a team and we are looking for it. This number of attackers will not be determined. Athletes’ versatility is an important part.”

Going by Tite’s explanation, Jesus is expected to make a return to the team for the World Cup, while defender Gabriel, who is still yet to earn his first senior cap, and Martinelli who is just breaking into the Brazil team could miss out.

THE VERDICT: “GOOD NEWS” FOR ARTETA

Although Tite’s decision is a blow for the Arsenal trio, especially Magalhaes and Martinelli, but it is good news for Gunners boss Mikel Arteta. He will be excited to see Jesus, Martinelli and Gabriel a rare extended rest at the end of the month.

With his side currently battling a midfield crisis, Arteta will be happy to keep his players fresh as the Gunners do have a hectic schedule over the next eight months. There are 32 Premier League games still to be played, as well as Europa League, FA Cup and EFL Cup ties. In total, the North London outfit could end up playing more than 60 matches this term.

Without any doubt, not being called up by the national team would hurt Martinelli and Magalhaes a lot but they need to stay focused and continue playing their part in Arsenal’s story this season. One thing is certain though, consistent performances over the course of the season could see either of them get called up.
