Arsenal are long-term admirers of Dutch forward Cody Gakpo and appear to have made a final decision regarding a potential move for the 23-year-old.

THE LOWDOWN: FLYING DUTCHMAN

Cody Gakpo enjoyed a remarkable 2021/22 season with PSV Eindhoven and since then he has been on the watchlist of many top clubs on the continent, including the Gunners.

The Dutch wonder-kid featured in 47 games for PSV, scoring 21 goals and made 15 assists last season. He has maintained the same form this season with 13 goal contributions in just nine appearances in all competitions.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have been linked with the likes of Moussa Diaby, and Pedro Neto this summer, starting off with an unsuccessful attempt to bring Raphinha to the Emirates Stadium.

Names had gone quiet since as the focus turned to outgoings before Pedro Neto emerged as another candidate last week. The most recent name to come up is Marco Asensio, but nothing has been said since the first link.

However, Arsenal have shown interest in the versatile Gakpo previously but it seems a final decision has been made regarding the player.

THE LATEST: ARSENAL DECISION

Arsenal are set to go active on the transfer deadline day, with a new forward believed to be at the top of Mikel Arteta’s shopping list.

Speaking last week, the Spaniard admitted that Nicolas Pepe’s departure could lead to a replacement coming in although reiterated that it wasn’t a guarantee.

Another player who is unlikely to make the move to north London is PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo. That’s because Dutch journalist Rik Elfrink has claimed that Arsenal are one of a number of clubs to have passed by the chance of signing the player, leaving Southampton in pole position to land the 23-year-old.

Arsenal could be looking at getting a midfielder instead, following the mini-injury crisis.

THE VERDICT: OUT OF REACH

Gakpo would have been an excellent addition to the team but it seems Arsenal are no longer interested in his services. Arsenal’s decision to pull off from the chase could be because of the Mohamed Elneny injury, which might be forcing the Gunners to look at getting a new midfielder in instead.
