Arsenal are expected to make at least one signing in the January transfer window and the position has been identified.

THE LOWDOWN: PAST SEARCH, FRESH LIST

The summer window did not end in the best possible way for the Gunners as their final push for Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz ended in futility. Villa were not willing to listen to offers, while Arsenal were pushed back by Leicester’s asking price for Youri Tielemans, who is already in his final year at the Premier League club.

Ahead of January, the Gunners have started planning and hoping for a successful winter business, as they seek to remain at the top of the league and keep competing for a top-four finish. Manuel Locatelli and Ruben Neves have been identified, while Villa’s Luis‘ name has popped up once again.

A report has now emerged that the Gunners are set to spend again in January and it will be on a new central midfielder.

THE LATEST: A MUST-BUY

The Daily Mail reports that Arsenal are keen on spending again in January, with a new central midfielder top of their wishlist.

The Gunners enjoyed good success in the summer with the acquisition of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City, Fabio Vieira from FC Porto, Matt Turner and Marquinhos.

Edu and Arteta pushed for more deals in the summer but they were let down, suggesting the North London outfit could finally make a move for a winger and a central midfielder in January or next summer.

And now, it looks like midfield is the priority, especially with Mohamed Elneny and Emile Smith Rowe’s long-term absences plus Thomas Partey’s recurring fitness issues.

THE VERDICT: KEY DECISION

Arteta and Edu have a key decision to make in January as per the midfielder they will be settling for.

Different classes and sets of skills have differentiated the players and it will be down to a crucial decision in the new year, that will determine the next midfielder to join the Gunners.
