Arsenal players Gabriel Jesus and Granit Xhaka faced off when Brazil met Switzerland at the ongoing 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

THE LOWDOWN: WINNING STARTS

Gabriel Jesus enjoyed a winning start to the tournament with Brazil some days back against a stubborn Serbia side. While Switzerland and Xhaka laboured to a 1-0 win over Cameroon to begin their campaign in Qatar on a winning note.

That alone set the tone for their mouthwatering clash on match day two. A win for either side would confirm their place in the last 16, while a draw would put both of them in pole position to progress.

In the end, it was the five-time champions who found a way against their difficult opposition at the stadium 974 on Monday.

THE LATEST: HOW IT HAPPENED

Gabriel Jesus’ Brazil edged Xhaka’s Switzerland to book their place in the round of 16 of this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

Casemiro’s sensational first-time strike in the 83rd minute proved to be the difference, which earned the Selecao successive wins in the group.

Jesus was introduced to the field on 73 minutes following a difficult start to the match, while Xhaka was on from the start for the Swiss side.

Vinicius’ initial opener for Brazil was chalked off for offside before the Manchester United midfielder’s excellent goal finally broke the hearts of the Swiss.

For Xhaka and his side, they have a chance to reach the next round on Friday, December 2 when they face Serbia, knowing a win or a draw could take them through if Brazil doesn’t lose to Cameroon.

Meanwhile, Jesus and Martinelli – who was an unused substitute against the Swiss – can finish as group winners when they face Cameroon simultaneously.

THE VERDICT: LOOKING GOOD

It is looking good for a number of Arsenal players at the World Cup in Qatar. Brazil are through and Switzerland could join them by Friday.
