Arsenal legend and pundit Kevin Campbell would welcome the addition of Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez at Arsenal this summer…

THE LOWDOWN: HEAVILY LINKED

Arsenal and Tottenham have been heavily linked with the 24-year-old since last year, while Manchester United are also said to have joined the race for the prolific forward.

Martinez has scored 70 goals for Inter since 2018, helping the club to their first Serie A title in 11 years last season, as well as winning the Copa America with Argentina last summer.

His success and form over the past few years has led to him becoming one of Europe’s most prized assets, hence the amount of interest from Europe’s top clubs.

His agent Alejandro Camano has recently played down the rumours regarding the striker’s future, but the former Arsenal and Everton striker has provided his take on the Argentinian goal machine.

THE LATEST: HE’S MUSTARD

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Campbell said the 24-year-old would be “an exceptional signing” for Mikel Arteta’s side.

When asked if he would welcome the addition of the forward, he said: “Martinez is a finisher, that is what he is.

“Arsenal do create a lot of chances.

“Let’s be honest, Arsenal have played the season without a lethal striker. [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang went off the boil, [Alexandre] Lacazette went off the boil and [Eddie] Nketiah isn’t the answer.

“They have been relying on [Bukayo] Saka, [Emile] Smith Rowe, [Martin] Odegaard and [Gabriel] Martinelli notching goals. They have been relying on the youngsters.

“We need a regular scorer at the top end of the pitch for next season. I think Martinez would be an exceptional signing. I think he’s mustard.”

THE VERDICT: CAMPBELL’S RIGHT

Campbell is right, the Argentine would indeed be an exceptional signing for the club and fans.

The 37-time Argentina international has enjoyed a rapid rise since joining Inter Milan from Racing Club in the summer of 2018 for just €20m (£18m).

The 24-year-old striker has established himself as a mainstay in the Nerazzurri’s attacking unit and one of the most deadliest finishers on the continent, racking up 171 appearances while amassing a tally of 87 goal contributions (65 goals, 22 assists) in the process.

The £63m-rated hitman proved instrumental in Inter Milan breaking Juventus’ Serie A dominance last term, winning the club’s first Scudetto in 11 years.

Providing Arsenal do snap up the Argentinian goal machine, he would provide Arteta’s men with the title-winning experience to beef up their squad, not only that but he’s remained a consistent goal scorer throughout his time in Italy.

Martinez would be a considerable upgrade on their current forward options and ultimately be the man to fire the Gunners to glory if he is to move to London this summer.

AND in other Arsenal news, £9m-rated Gunners “goal machine” could be making the move across London this summer…
