Arsenal are working on a deal to sell versatile player Ainsley Maitland-Niles before the transfer window shuts on September 1.

THE LOWDOWN: MIXED TIME AT ARSENAL

Ainsley Maitland-Niles signed his first professional contract with Arsenal in 2014 at the age of 17. He went on to make his debut in the first team that same season under Arsene Wenger, featuring in the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup and the Premier League.

He was then sent out on loan to Ipswich but after he returned, he became a regular member of the Arsenal squad between 2017 and 2020. He spent the rest of the 2022/21 campaign at West Bromwich Albion on loan and earned five caps for England.

But after Arsenal’s summer business that summer, the Englishman has fallen down the pecking order under Arteta and will need to seek out regular first-team football. This made him spend the 2021/22 campaign at AS Roma, where he made only made eight appearances in Serie A under Jose Mourinho.

THE LATEST: EXIT TALK

The Evening Standard are reporting that Arsenal are still hopeful that they will be able to sell both Hector Bellerin and Maitland-Niles before the window shuts.

Earlier in the window, Nottingham Forest were keen on signing ‘fantastic’ Maitland-Niles but that seems to have cooled after the club signed Neco Williams.

Maitland-Niles looks likely to leave Arsenal this summer and the player seems to be surplus to requirements in North London. He versatility could make him get offers from prospective clubs.

The player is keen on a move away from the club on a permanent basis and it is left to be seen if offers would come in time for his services before the window closes.

THE VERDICT: NEEDS TO LEAVE

Ainsley Maitland-Niles knows that his future no longer lies with the Gunners, so a permanent move away from the club is even more important for him at the moment.

Arteta and Edu have talked about overseeing some exits before the window ends and after the previous departures, Niles should be next on the list.

With his contract now heading into its final year, Arsenal will be hoping to sell the player before he is able to leave for free next summer.
