Arsenal defender Pablo Mari, who is currently on loan at Serie A club Monza, was stabbed in Milan on Thursday, and an update has emerged on his condition.

MARI ON LOAN AT MONZA

The Spaniard has been surplus to requirements at the Emirates Stadium in recent months, going on loan to Udinese, where his impressive performances could have earned him a permanent move but it did not happen.

Over the summer, he eventually got a move to newly-promoted Serie A club AC Monza and has continued to feature for them. The 29-year-old has made eight appearances for the club and has one goal to his name.

However, a serious incident occurred in a supermarket near Milan on Thursday, with a knife attack claiming one life and Mari among several people who were injured.

PABLO MARI RECEIVING HOSPITAL TREATMENT

Arsenal have confirmed that the player is currently hospitalised and receiving treatment after the stabbing.

A statement from Arsenal reads: “We are all shocked to hear the dreadful news about the stabbing in Italy, which has put a number of people in hospital including our on-loan centre-back Pablo Mari.

“We have been in contact with Pablo’s agent who has told us he’s in hospital and is not seriously hurt. Our thoughts are with Pablo and the other victims of this dreadful incident.

Meanwhile, Pablo’s faither has confirmed that his son was not seriously injured in the incident. He spoke to Spanish radio outlet Cadena Cope on Thursday night about the 29-year-old’s condition, saying that he was doing “fine” and that he “loved [his family] very much.”

Mari Sr added: “These have been very worrying hours for us. They started calling me at 8pm and my heart has skipped a beat.”

However, he subsequently confirmed that being able to speak to his son has eased his fears, stating: “[Veronica, the footballer’s partner] just told us they were taking him to the hospital and nothing more. After she said don’t call [son] Pablo, he is by her side and he’s feeling well, it was all just a fright… and she saw someone die in front of her.”

Mari’s on-loan club Monza have also responded to the incident, with CEO Adriano Galliani saying: “Pablo Marì is not in danger as his injuries are not life-threatening. We hope to see him back soon.”

Galliani added: “Dear Pablo, we are all here close to you and your family, we love you, keep fighting as you know how to do, you are a warrior and you will get well soon.”

A subsequent tweet from Mari’s official Twitter profile on Friday afternoon reads: “After the hard time we experienced yesterday, both my family and I want to communicate that fortunately we are all fine despite the circumstances, and to thank all the messages of support and affection that we are receiving.”

It is good to hear that Mari is fine and that he hasn’t suffered any serious injury.

We send our deepest condolences to the family of Luis Fernando Ruggieri, who lost his life in Thursday’s attack, and pray for a full recovery for those who were injured non-fatally. Our thoughts are also with the families of everybody affected by the incident.
