According to a report, Leicester City are still waiting for Arsenal‘s formal bid for want-away midfielder Youri Tielemans.
THE LOWDOWN: UNENDING PURSUIT
Arsenal went on a spending spree this summer as the club spent over £100m on transfers for the second consecutive year. Fabio Vieira, Gabriel Jesus, Matt Turner, Marquinhos and Oleksandr Zinchenko have all arrived the Emirates this summer as the Gunners target a return to Europe’s elite competition, the UEFA Champions League.
As for Youri Tielemans, he has been linked with a move to the Emirates since January but nothing concrete has come to light yet. Manager Mikel Arteta has been keen on bringing a goalscoring midfielder – a profile that fits the Belgian’s – but it has not happened just yet.
While Tielemans hasn’t necessarily enjoyed his best year for Leicester, he has still continued to be a key man for the King Power outfit, scoring six goals in 25 Premier League starts and averaging 1.1 key passes per game.
The 24-year-old has his contract expiring in 2023, and it seems the current situation has not changed with less than a month to the end of the transfer window.
THE LATEST: NO FORMAL BID
Several reports say Leicester City are still waiting for Arsenal to present a formal bid for Youri Tielemans, who they value at £25-30m.
As per The Guardian, they claim that Leicester City expect Arsenal to move for Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans this summer. Meanwhile, The Daily Mail confirmed that Arsenal remain interested in the player but the Gunners are yet to submit an official bid – as has been repeated throughout the summer.
On his part, CBS Sports’ Ben Jacobs stated that Leicester waiting for an offer for Tielemans soon, with an Arsenal move still “very possible” despite their lack of bid. Jacobs adds that Tielemans understandably wants the uncertainty over his future resolved. He’s been waiting a long time now for the bids to come in.
THE VERDICT: NOT A MUST
The arrival of Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City and Fabio Vieira may have played a part in why Arsenal have not made a move yet. Moreover, the Gunners should not be lured into paying such an amount for Tielemans, who will be available on a free transfer next summer.
Without any doubt, he’s good and has huge Premier League experience but the presence of Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka, Mohammed Elneny, and Albert Sambi Lokonga in midfield at the moment doesn’t make his signing a must-have at the moment.
