Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner was one of the stars of the show when USA faced Wales in their opener on Monday night.

THE LOWDOWN: WORLD CUP DEBUT

Matt Turner, who left MLS side New England Revolution in the summer for Arsenal, made the USA squad to the World Cup despite playing a few games for the Gunners in the opening half of the season.

The shot-stopper was decent in the few games he was listed, as he kept three clean sheets in the four Europa League games he played. However, the jury was out on him and his chances of doing well at the Mundial in Qatar.

In his first appearance against Wales, he was very good in goal and helped his side avoid defeat with some stunning saves.

THE LATEST: HOW IT HAPPENED

Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner was in goal for the USA against Wales on Monday night.

The Americans dominated Wales in the opening 45 minutes and should had more goals in the first half but Wales stayed in the game.

In the second half, however, Wales came out better and looked more likely to get a goal, and the USA were under serious pressure.

Tottenham star Ben Davies had a golden opportunity to level the game in the second half and his header looked destined to find the back of the net. However, Arsenal star Turner stepped up and he pulled off a truly magnificent save to keep his side a goal up.

In the end, Gareth Bale scored a penalty to ensure the two countries shared a point.

THE VERDICT: TOP DEBUT AND BRILLIANT DISPLAY

Turner was good in the game and that should guarantee his starting shirt in the next match against England.

His performance against Wales should give him some confidence going into a very crucial and decisive match against early group leaders England.
