Arsenal legend Paul Merson was impressed with his former side’s performance against Liverpool, calling it ‘outstanding’ and ‘phenomenal.’

THE LOWDOWN: OUTSTANDING ARSENAL

Arsenal stood their ground against one of the foremost sides in the Premier League on Sunday. Mikel Arteta’s men came up against Liverpool and they eventually passed the test. Having started the season in stunning fashion, the Gunners have surprised many and they extended their stay on the top of the log by another match day.

The impressive Gabriel Martinelli handed Arsenal the lead less than a minute in, but Liverpool fought back through Darwin Nunez. In first-half stoppage time, Martinelli turned provider for Bukayo Saka to put Arsenal back in the lead.

Jurgen Klopp’s men were never going to be put away easily as they drew level for the second time through Roberto Frimino before Bukayo Saka converted a penalty late on to secure all three points for the North London outfit.

After such a wonderful performance, a former star of the side has labelled the effort of the lads outstanding and phenomenal.

THE LATEST: OUTSTANDING AND PHENOMENAL

Paul Merson has labelled Arsenal ‘outstanding’ and ‘phenomenal’ for how they outplayed Liverpool in their 3-2 Premier League victory at home.

In their analysis after the game, Merson praised Arsenal for how they were able to manage the game after going 3-2 up with about 14 minutes left to be played.

It is an Arsenal have struggled with in recent years, but they look much ready and solid at the back to hold on to leads this season.

“Outstanding,” Merson said about Arsenal on Sky Sports. “I thought they started very well, got out of the blocks and scored early doors. Liverpool got into it and were probably the better team when it went to 1-1.

“You’re looking for half time to come so you can settle and then they [Arsenal] go 2-1 up.

“Come out second half, then Liverpool get an equaliser again. And then when they [Arsenal] scored, I thought Arsenal’s management of the game was phenomenal. After they went 3-2 up there was never really a threat from Liverpool.

“You’re talking about a young team that looked a very experienced team at the end. They kept the ball, never panicked and I was so impressed. They’re top of the league [with] another game gone, keep on doing what they’re doing.

“I haven’t seen the place [Emirates Stadium] like this for a very long time.”

THE VERDICT: WELL DESERVED PRAISE

Arsenal will keep getting the deserved recognition and praise for performances and results like this. Mikel Arteta and his lads just need to remain focused on finishing in the top four, which has been the goal since the season started.
