Arsenal failed in their bid to sign a midfielder in the summer and it appears the Gunners will prioritize getting one in the winter transfer window.

THE LOWDOWN: FAILED ATTEMPTS

Arsenal were in the market for an extra midfielder and that chase led them to perennial target Youri Tielemans. However, failure to table an offer led to a breakdown in talks. The Gunners then decided to wait for the Belgian to be available for free in January – which was a logical move.

However, after injuries to Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny, Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz and Danilo emerged as Arsenal’s target in the hours leading to the deadline day, as Mikel Arteta was in dire need of reinforcement in the middle of the park.

None of the transfer push materialized into a move, while the Gunners are still short in midfield, there is a huge possibility that one of the missed targets will move to the Emirates in January.

THE LATEST: ANOTHER ATTEMPT

As per several reliable sources, Arsenal will be going back for either Douglas Luiz or Youri Tielemans in the January transfer window.

As per GiveMeSport, both players are in the final months of their contracts and are looking for a way out of their respective clubs.

Transfer expert Dean Jones, when asked whether a January move is possible for Luiz or Tielemans, he told GIVEMESPORT: “I think Arsenal will have to look into the market again. I think we’re already seeing signs that this squad isn’t going to be deep enough, so it will be really interesting once we get to that point and get through the World Cup.”

THE VERDICT: GOOD NEWS

Arsenal are currently light in midfield and Arteta would still be disappointed that his side’s three deadline day bids for Douglas Luiz were rejected by Aston Villa. That is already in the past and the future looks bright with either of Luiz or Tielemans set to come to the Emirates.

With both players in the final months of their contract, a pre-contract can even be agreed upon by January if a permanent transfer will not be possible. The window will open shortly after the World Cup and that could even change the dynamics of things.
