Thomas Partey and Ghana secured their first victory at the 2022 World Cup as they defeated South Korea 3-2 in an entertaining match on Monday.

THE LOWDOWN: IMPORTANT GAME

Partey’s Ghana lost their first game in Qatar game to Portugal 3-2 in what was an entertaining game last week.

It became important to secure a win against South Korea on match day two in order to keep their hopes of reaching the next round alive.

The Arsenal man started the defeat to Portugal and was also listed for the must-win-game against the Asians at the Education City Stadium in Qatar.

THE LATEST: MASSIVE WIN

Thomas Partey played a crucial role in Ghana’s 3-2 win against South Korea to get their tournament back on track.

Having lost the first game, it was important to avoid defeat against the Asians, which they aimed for from the start of the game.

Goals from Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu and Mohammed Kudus in the first half gave Ghana a two-goal cushion.

However, a three-minute brace from Cho Gue-sung restored parity in the game once again on 61 minutes, but things soon went in favour of Ghana just seven minutes later when Kudus grabbed his second and Ghana’s third to put them the Black Stars back in front.

Despite a late surge from the Asians, the West Africans held on for an important win, and the full-time whistle saw Korean coach Paulo Bento red-carded for his protests after referee Anthony Taylor denied his team the chance to take one final corner.

Having featured in back-to-back games for Ghana, Partey and Ghana will now get the opportunity to seal a spot in the last-16 when face against Uruguay on Friday, December 2. A win could send them through at the expense of the Uruguayans.

THE VERDICT: HOPE FOR MORE

Ghana brightened their chances of progressing from the group with the win over the South Koreans.

Their final group game against Uruguay is a rematch of their quarterfinal clash back in 2010 and would decide their fate at this year’s Mundial.
