Journalist Paul Brown has stated that Arsenal’s signing of Jorginho from Chelsea on the January transfer window deadline day was what the Gunners needed.

THE LOWDOWN: DIVISIVE SIGNING

Arsenal fans have their reservations over Mikel Arteta’s choice to sign Jorginho for a number of reasons. One of them is that he was a last-minute replacement for the club’s main transfer target in Moises Caicedo. The other is that Arsenal has not had the best luck with players transferred in from Chelsea in recent years.

Despite Caicedo’s willingness to join Arsenal in the just concluded transfer window, Brighton and Hove Albion refused to let the Ecuadorian leave the club. That opened the door for Mikel Arteta to bring in Jorginho, a player he admires and had spoken highly of in the past.

The jury is out on the Italian to deliver at the Emirates but some believe what he offers to the Gunners goes beyond his physical abilities.

THE LATEST: JORGINHO MORE ‘IMPACTFUL’ THAN CAICEDO

Journalist Paul Brown claims that Jorginho is a very good fit for Arsenal and that both he and Caicedo can fit into Arsenal’s midfield should the Gunners go after the Brighton man in the next transfer window.

“I know that Arsenal fans are annoyed that they didn’t manage to get Caicedo, and Jorginho feels like a sort of second-rate bargain buy in comparison to him, but it’s just not the case at all. I genuinely think there would have been a place for both of them at Arsenal,” said Brown on GiveMeSport.

“Caicedo’s a very different kind of player; he looks like a sexier name because there was more money involved, but that’s because of his age because you pay for potential, and he’s on a longer contract.

“If you’re assigning one of those players to make a difference to Arsenal this season to get them over the line and win a title, it’s Jorginho, not Caicedo.”

THE VERDICT: UNPROVEN CLAIM

It is a fact that Jorginho has won titles and brings a winning mentality to the Emirates, similar to Gabriel Jesus and Zinchenko who both joined from Manchester City.

However, it remains to be seen if he would indeed be pivotal in the latter end of the season as Arsenal seek to claim the title for the first time in 20 years.

Games will come thick and fast over the coming weeks and Mikel Arteta will all his players at their best capacity, including Jorginho.
