Arsenal legend Paul Merson has named club captain Martin Odegaard in his Premier League’s list of top midfielders.

THE LOWDOWN: TOP PERFORMER

Martin Odegaard’s performances in an Arsenal shirt have gone up since he made his debut in January 2021. The mercurial midfielder has grown to become one of the side’s top players and it wasn’t surprising that Mikel Arteta handed him the armband this season.

Arsenal have been able to stay at the top of the log this term and Odegaard has played a big part in it. He has scored three goals so far, as they began the season in stunning fashion.

THE LATEST: TOP RANK

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has ranked Gunners captain Martin Odegaard as one of the Premier League’s top midfielders in his Sportskeeda list.

Merson decided to name Odegaard in his top five list, while the likes of Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, Manchester City’s Phil Foden and Chelsea’s Mason Mount all missed out.

“At the moment, I’ll put Martin Odegaard at #5 because he’s taken Arsenal to another level this season,” he wrote.

“He’s got a swagger about the way he plays and moves. While he’s also added goals to his game. Odegaard has been around for a while, so it’s easy to forget he’s only 23. The fact that he’s Arsenal’s captain at such a young age shows how highly Mikel Arteta rates him.

“I like Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount, Phil Foden and the likes. But Odegaard is someone who has already made a massive impact this season. He plays in a position where he has to make things happen and he’s done just that as Arsenal find themselves at the top of the Premier League table with 18 points from seven games.”

THE VERDICT: NOT OUT OF PLACE

Odegaard has grown to become one of the Premier League’s best midfielders in the past year. His numbers in terms of ball usage and creation is high up there with the likes of Kevin Bruyne and co.

If Arsenal are going to return to the UCL this season or even win a trophy, the Norwegian has a huge role to play and must be fit for the crucial games.
