Amid recent speculation, Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson has opened up on his future at the Emirates.

THE LOWDOWN: DIFFICULT TIME

Nelson rose through the ranks at the Hale End academy and was on loan at Feyenoord last season. During his time with the Dutch side, the forward was involved in 11 goals in 32 appearances.

He returned to Arsenal and featured in all but one of Arsenal’s seven preseason games and was also listed in the squad for the Premier League Opener at Palace. However, injury struck and he did not get to feature in the league until Sunday’s bashing of Nottingham Forest.

The 22-year-old marked his first appearance since the start of last season with two goals and an assist to help the Gunners return to the summit of the log.

THE LATEST: DESIRE TO STAY

Arsenal youngster Reiss Nelson has admitted that he would be happy to sign a contract extension with the north London club.

Nelson came off the bench to replace the injured Bukayo Saka after 27 minutes in the 5-0 win over Nottingham Forest. He scored twice in four minutes early into the second half before teeing up Thomas Partey for a spectacular fourth goal.

However, Nelson’s current deal is due to expire next summer, but he is hoping to sign to remain at the Emirates beyond 2023.

According to The Athletic, he said: “I’ve never doubted myself at this football club. Arsenal is a team that I’ve been at since I was eight years old and I have a very, very strong bond and love for the club.”

“Of course, there have been times where I’ve been a bit down when I haven’t played or been on the bench, but my plan has never been for me to leave the club or say that I have no future here and I will do everything possible to get there.”

“I only have some months left on my contract. Getting a new deal would be amazing and I would love to commit to the club. Any opportunity I get I’m going to try and take and just do my very best and just keep helping the team really.”

THE VERDICT: GOOD TALK

Nelson – who has not made a mark at the Emirates since his promotion to the first team – he will be hoping for a turn of events as long as he stays fit.

He could be an asset down the wings for Arsenal, especially with the fixture congestion coming up in the next few days. Meanwhile, if he is going to get an extension, he needs to prove his worth before the summer.
