Arsenal defender William Saliba and France lost on penalties to Argentina in the FIFA 2022 World Cup final in Qatar.

THE LOWDOWN: CRUNCHING DEFEAT

William Saliba’s France reached the 2022 World Cup final to face Argentina, after beating the tournament’s surprise packages Morocco 2-0 in the semifinal.

A Lionel Messi-led Argentina needed penalties to edge defending champions France after it finished 3-3 in regulation time at the Lusail Stadium in Doha.

THE LATEST: BREATHTAKING FINAL

William Saliba saw no action in the 2022 World Cup final as Argentina pipped France to the trophy in Qatar.

In a match that will go down as one of the greatest games in World Cup history, Les Bleus came back from two goals down thanks to a Kylian Mbappe brace to force extra time, before Lionel Messi netted his second goal of the game in the 108th minute.

But Mbappe was on hand to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot to become the first player to score a World Cup final hat-trick since Sir Geoff Hurst in 1966, and force a shootout.

Former Arsenal man Emiliano Martinez was the hero, saving Kingsley Coman’s attempt before Aurelien Tchouameni sent his effort wide, leaving Gonzalo Montiel to clinch Argentina’s first triumph since 1986.

Saliba made his debut earlier this year and his appearance against Tunisia in Qatar was his eighth cap for his country.

THE VERDICT: MISSED OUT ON HISTORY

Saliba missed the opportunity to join Per Mertesacker, Lukas Podolski and Mesut Ozil as the recent players of the club to have won the World Cup.

Meanwhile, the youngster would have loved to play more games but that didn’t happen and will now turn his attention to the resumption of the Premier League with Arsenal.
