Arsenal have reportedly identified Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as the ideal alternative to Declan Rice in the summer transfer window.

THE LOWDOWN: DESPERATE FOR MIDFIELD ADDITION

The Gunners have been on the matter of a new midfielder for a while now. The summer transfer window passed without Mikel Arteta’s men bringing in a new midfielder and it took a serious injury to Mohamed Elneny in January before a drastic action was taken to bring in a new man.

Arsenal missed out on Douglas Luiz in August and tried everything possible to get Moises Caicedo from Brighton but they were not willing to sell to them.

However, in a bid not to leave the market without any signing, the Gunners snapped up Jorginho from Chelsea.

THE LATEST: SUMMER ALTERNATIVE

Arsenal are hoping to sign Declan Rice from West Ham in the summer, but Lazio’s Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has been identified as an alternative.

West Ham are expected to face series of bids for the England international, with Arsenal alongside Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea all interested.

But Arteta has already secured an ideal ‘Plan B’ target in the Lazio star Milinkovic-Savic, according to Corriere dello Sport.

The report stated that the Serbia international has already made a decision on leaving the Stadio Olimpico this summer as he is interested in playing in the Champions League.

Much like Rice, Milinkovic-Savic’s contract will expire at the end of next season and Lazio might have to receive offers this summer.

THE VERDICT: GOOD MOVE

It is a sensible move to have an alternative to the main target and Milinkovic-Savic is more than capable. Arsenal are actually favourites to sign Rice but things could change like it did in the Mudryk deal.
