Mikael Silvestre has compared current Arsenal skipper Martin Ødegaard’s leadership with that of former captain Cesc Fabregas.

THE LOWDOWN: INFLUENTIAL SKIPPER

Like Cesc Fabregas during his time at Arsenal, Martin Odegaard has been superb in games for Arsenal since he moved to North London. The Norwegian has grown to become one of the team’s most trusted players which culminated in Mikel Arteta handing him the armband days before the start of this season.

On the pitch, the former Real Madrid man has been able to score seven times and made five assists in 15 Premier League games this season, signalling his status as a leader in terms of performance.

THE VERDICT: PUNDIT’S COMPARISON

Mikael Silvestre has compared current Arsenal skipper Martin Ødegaard’s leadership style with that of former captain Cesc Fabregas.

Ødegaard has been a critical figure for their superb run this season and he has been compared to Manchester City talisman Kevin De Bruyne. However, Silvestre argued that they are different players before hailing Ødegaard for his contributions.

“I think Ødegaard and De Bruyne are different players. Martin is confirming all the good things that he’s shown over the years and he’s confirming the reason why he was given the armband.”

“He’s confirming the transfer which was originally a loan. A loan made permanent. He’s a real, real asset for Arsenal and he’s growing into a technical leader, complimenting the vocal leadership of Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey.”

Speaking of his leadership, Silvestre compared Ødegaard’s situation to that of former Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas.

“You know when Cesc Fabregas was made captain, it was quite similar. Very young but you are the best on the pitch.”

“We’ve seen him talking to players, taking responsibility on big moments where you have to rally players around you and take an important free-kick. He took yellow cards when it was needed. He’s really stepping up.”

THE VERDICT: PERFECT PICTURE

Silvestre has explained the situation surrounding Ødegaard’s time and that of Fabregas. He is quite an influential figure both on and off the pitch in his young Arsenal career so far. He is on course to lead Arsenal to their first league title in two decades and we can only hope it plays out that way until the end.
