Former Arsenal man Mikael Silvestre believes William Saliba might not feature for France at the World Cup.

THE LOWDOWN: NO MINUTES

Saliba has impressed for Arsenal since the season started and he’s formed a solid partnership at the heart of the backline with Gabriel Magalhaes to help the Gunners to the summit of the Premier League log.

And he was selected for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar by Didier Deschamps despite his poor showing against Denmark in the UEFA Nations League some weeks earlier.

However, he’s barely played at the Mundial with the likes of Raphael Varane, Ibrahima Konate and Dayot Upamecano being favoured ahead of him.

THE LATEST: PUNDIT’S EXPLANATION

Mikael Silvestre has explained why he thinks Arsenal man Saliba won’t be playing for France at the World Cup.

“I would think that Varane would continue and I’m afraid for Saliba, that Upamecano will also continue, Silvestre said in an interview with BettingExpert.

“The pair did well against Denmark and they need to work more together to get used to one another. Unless we start playing with three at the back, which could be an option for the next round but I doubt it.”

“So, in the central defence, I do not expect any change. That’s not where you run the most so I think they (Varane and Upamecano) can play two-three games in a row. So it would make sense for them to start against Tunisia.”

THE VERDICT: HIS TIME WILL COME

Saliba would have loved to play at this World Cup but for now, he is only just part of the squad and made his debut earlier this year.

He has the opportunity to feature at multiple tournaments in the future and his experience here could help him going forward.
