Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table with a comfortable 3-1 victory over north London rivals Tottenham on Saturday.

THE LOWDOWN: BRAGGING RIGHTS AND THREE POINTS

After making a flying start to the season, the only accusation being lobbied at Arsenal before this weekend was that they had not claimed a statement result against a ‘big side’.

Thomas Partey’s long-range strike opened the scoring but Harry Kane’s penalty tied things up at the break. Gabriel Jesus soon restored Arsenal’s lead after the interval and, after Emerson Royal was sent off, Granit Xhaka’s strike eventually secured all three points.

Arsenal were completely the better side and deservedly secured a third straight home victory in this fixture for the first time since 2013.

For Partey, he scored his third Premier League goal for Arsenal, meaning all of his goals have come at the Emirates and were openers as well. The Gunners went on to win all those games.

Gabriel Jesus continues his brilliant form at Arsenal, meaning only Erling Haaland (12) has been directly involved in more Premier League goals than Jesus (8) this season, while only Andrey Arshavin (9) had more involvements in his first eight appearances for Arsenal in the Premier League.

It is also a good run of form for Arteta in the north London derby as a manager, as the Spaniard has won all three of his home games in charge against Tottenham. It means only two other managers have done that – George Morrell (1909-1911) and Terry Neill (1977-1979).

THE LATEST: STATEMENT RESULT

October has been labelled as a difficult period for Arsenal and they have started on the best possible note.

However, there are more tough fixtures to come, starting with Liverpool at the weekend. Just before that clash against the Reds though, the Gunners will return to Europa League action against Bodo/Glimt and will be eager to solidify their status as Group leaders with a win against the Norwegian outfit.

THE VERDICT: SOMETHING TO BUILD ON

Arsenal have now shown their title prospects with a win over Tottenham in what was a statement result. Though many continue to doubt the Gunners’ title push, they continue to claim points and show that they are a much different side from last season.

Should Arsenal go on to record a result against Liverpool as well, it would surely spark more talk about the Gunners being the sole challengers for the Premier League title, alongside Manchester City.
