Arsenal are reportedly backing away from a deal to bring Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin to the Emirates this summer.

THE LOWDOWN: PREVIOUS LINKS

The Toffees forward has previously been on the radar of the Gunners, with the club looking to sign replacements for Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah who were both out of contract at the Emirates.

According to Football Insider, Calvert-Lewin favoured a move to Arsenal over Newcastle and was reported to be willing to attempt to push for a move to the Emirates Stadium in the upcoming market.

However, things have certainly changed in the last few weeks with Nketiah signing a new long-term deal to remain in North London and the Gunners prioritising a move for Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus this summer.

THE LATEST: ON HOLD

According to the Daily Star, Arsenal have put their pursuit of Calvert-Lewin on hold as a result of fears over the 25-year-old’s form and fitness last season.

While the Gunners may well resurrect their interest in the Toffees hitman in the future, at present, the North Londoners don’t appear to see the forward as part of their immediate plans.

THE VERDICT: CORRECT DECISION

With Nketiah’s new deal and the north London outfit prioritising a move for Gabriel Jesus, the decision to shelve a move for the Sheffield-born star looks the correct decision from Arteta.

A move for the £36m-rated forward may well have upset squad harmony, especially with Nketiah staying at the club due to first-team guarantees.

However, if Arsenal do make it into the Champions League next season, and the forward still remains an Everton player, with Newcastle reportedly interested, then a move for Calvert-Lewin could be an ideal capture to boost their attacking prowess on Europe’s biggest club stage.

For now, the Gunners must indeed place all their eggs in the Jesus basket as the Brazilian looks the perfect acquisition for Arteta’s team in the long-term.
