Arsenal may have to move quickly in a bid to sign Christopher Nkunku this summer, with RB Leipzig reportedly holding a ‘secret meeting’ with the midfielder’s agent to discuss a new contract…

THE LOWDOWN: PHENOMENAL SEASON

The 24-year-old French star has matured into one of the most potent and phenomenal attackers in the German top flight in recent years, catching the eye with his performances for Leipzig, with former boss Jesse Marsch once claiming he “has no weaknesses” as a player.

Nkunku has recorded some astonishing numbers in his goal contributions so far this campaign, notching 31 goals and 14 assists in all competitions.

The Frenchman’s current deal expires in 2024, and his current performances have led to much interest from around Europe these past few months, namely Arsenal, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Liverpool.

However, latest reports are now suggesting that he could be in line to secure a new long-term deal at the Red Bull Arena.

THE LATEST: SECRET MEETING

German news outlet Bild claim the Bundesliga outfit are fighting to keep Nkunku at the club, with a ‘secret meeting’ taking place with the forward’s agent, Pini Zahavi.

Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff reportedly made it clear that the club do not want to sell Nkunku and want to open discussions on a new deal.

The Frenchman does have a £50million release clause in his current contract, but that doesn’t kick in until 2023. Any new deal would likely come with a new exit clause, with Leipzig keen to extend his current one, which runs out in two years.

THE VERDICT: BAD NEWS

The £58.5m-rated French talisman is indeed one of the most lethal and decisive attacking players on the continent, so this latest report on his future will come as some bad news for the Gunners faithful.

Currently the fourth-highest rated player in the German Bundesliga with a rating of 7.58, it is easy to see why some of the world’s biggest clubs are all battling for his services this summer.

So far this campaign in the Bundesliga, the Lagny-sur-Marne-born goal machine averages 1.9 key passes, 1.9 dribbles and 2.3 shots per game, showcasing just why he is one of the best around in his attacking contributions.

Mikel Arteta is keen to add a lot of goalscoring firepower to his promising squad this summer, and possessing the likes of Nkunku will certainly transform Arsenal’s fortunes in front of goal, so with reports suggesting that the two-time French international could be staying at Leipzig , it could well turn out to be a missed opportunity for the Gunners.
