According to fresh reports, Italian outfit Monza are the latest side to show an interest in Arsenal defender Pablo Mari.

THE LOWDOWN: SURPLUS TO REQUIREMENTS

Since joining Arsenal in 2019, initially on a loan deal from Flamengo before signing a permanent deal, Pablo Mari is yet to enjoy a consistent run of games at the club. Despite making just three appearances during his initial loan spell, his deal was made permanent.

However, his lack of pace exposed him in the following campaign, although he was still able to make 16 appearances in all competitions. Mari’s inability to compete in the league forced the Gunners to sign another left-footed centre-back in Gabriel Magalhaes. The Brazilian easily took Mari’s spot, proving to be a more solid defender.

Last season, Mari only featured in the first two league games against Brentford and Chelsea before he was shipped out on loan to Seria A side Udinese in January. Although injuries have not been fair to him, it was at this Italian side that he featured regularly, playing 17 times in the Italian top-flight last term.

Mari’s loan spell in Italy was relatively successful, as he has attracted significant interest across Europe since then. Hellas Verona have shown strong interest, Fenerbahce have enquired about him too and Monza have joined the list of suitors as the latest interested party.

THE LATEST: ITALIAN INTEREST

Mari’s performance at Udinese has not gone unnoticed at all and he now has several Italian clubs looking to add him to their squad. Serie A Champions AC Milan were initially credited with an interest in his signature last month. Now, it’s Monza looking to bolster their backline with the addition of Mari.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, the Spanish defender is now being targeted by the ambitious Monza, who are set to play in the Seria A this coming season. In a bid to retain their Serie A status, the club are looking for quality additions to their squad and Mari has been identified to be one.

THE VERDICT: GOOD NEWS

Arsenal’s business in terms of bringing new players in might be nearing its end, but the transfer of players who have been marked surplus to requirements is very much important.

At the heart of the defence, Arsenal are not lacking at the moment. William Saliba has returned from loan and has already made a good impression in pre-season. There is Rob Holding, who is also in the squad as a backup, leaving no room for Mari.

Although he still has two years left on his contract, the best deal for all parties is to see the Spaniard leave the club on a permanent deal. At 28, He needs to enjoy regular football, while Arsenal also need to get rid of a player they don’t need anymore.
