According to reports, Arsenal are keeping tabs on Croatian midfielder Lovro Majer, who has been dubbed the new Modric, ahead of a potential future transfer.

THE LOWDOWN: MIDFIELDER SEARCH

The search for a new midfielder has taken Arsenal across Europe and South America. Links upon links in the just concluded window, but none materialized into a move. The closest the Gunners came would be the deadline day push for Aston Villa’s Douglas Luis.

With the winter transfer window in sight, Arsenal are already looking ahead for potential signings. The likes of Manuel Locatelli and Luis have resurfaced once again, while a new entrant – Croatian star midfielder – has emerged.

THE LATEST: EMERGING CROATIAN STAR

Arsenal are seriously monitoring highly-rated Rennes midfielder Lovro Majer ahead of a potential future transfer.

It has been revealed that the Gunners had scouts in attendance as the 24-year-old came off the bench to score the winner for Croatia against Denmark, in their 2-1 Nations League win on Thursday afternoon.

According to the Sun, this will be the second time that Arsenal scouts will be physically present to watch Majer play as they continue to increase their interest in the midfielder.

Majer’s excellent performances for both club and country have earned him the “new Luka Modric” tag and the midfielder is fast becoming a target for a host of top clubs across Europe.

The 24-year-old, who is just entering his second season in France, has already become a key member of the Rennes squad that finished fourth last year in the league.

THE VERDICT: GOOD FIT

Arsenal are simply looking for solutions in midfield at the moment, especially with the fitness issues of Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny’s long-term injury, which means Mikel Arteta needs to sign an extra midfielder in January.

Majer had an excellent debut season in France last term, where he registered six goals and eight assists over the course of the campaign.

It is now down to profile and cost for Edu and Arteta if any midfielder is to join the Gunners in January. A requirement that Majer currently ticks and if the interest is stepped up, he could be a Gunner before next summer.
