According to reports, Arsenal are in the race alongside Manchester United to sign Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo before the end of this summer transfer window.

THE LOWDOWN:  SEARCH FOR A MIDFIELDER

Arsenal are not yet done in the market and more arrivals could yet come in before the transfer window ends. The Gunners are currently in the market for a midfielder, especially one that carries a goal threat. Coupled with the exit of Lucas Torreira, getting a midfielder has become important more than ever for the North London outfit.

All summer, the likes of  Lyon’s Lucas Paqueta, Arthur Melo and long-term target Youri Tielemans have been linked with the Gunners but nothing concrete has materialized in recent windows. Recently, AC Milan’s star midfielder Sandro Tonali, was mentioned alongside the Gunners.

THE LATEST: BRIGHTON LINKS

As per the Sunday Mirror, new links have emerged that Arsenal and Manchester United are in the race to sign Ecuadorian midfielder Moises Caicedo this summer. The Gunners and rivals United are now in competition with West Ham United, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen and Juventus as clubs monitoring the player’s situation.

Caicedo has grown to become an important part of coach Graham Potter’s plans at Brighton after establishing his place in the second half of last season. Brighton are not desperately in need of funds after offloading Marc Cucurella to Chelsea for £63m earlier this month.

Earlier in the window, they lost midfielder Yves Bissouma to Tottenham Hotspur in the same window, receiving a further £25m for his services.

Brighton, at the expense of a host of European clubs, signed Caicedo from Independiente del Valle in a £4.5million deal in February 2021 and to price him away from the Amex Stadium, it will take a hefty offer for that to happen.

THE VERDICT: NOT NEEDED

After the kind of summer business Arsenal have done so far, getting a defensive midfielder would be a wrong buy. This is a role that has options in Thomas Partey, Mohammed Elneny and Albert Sambi Lokonga available to do the job.

Caicedo proved his worth against United some weeks back and he is definitely a quality player but he is not what Arsenal needs at the moment. If Arteta and Edu can’t find the right fit, which is a midfielder that can add goals to the team, there is no pressure to sign a player that won’t exactly provide the profile that isn’t already in the squad.
