Arsenal target Cody Gakpo has had quite the season for PSV Eindhoven, and now, he has won the Eredivisie’s Golden Shoe award, given to the best player in the division.

The winger beat out some stern opposition for this award including Manchester United target Jurrien Timber and Ajax stars Sebastien Haller and Dusan Tadic.

The 23-year-old helped his club to a second-place finish, just two points behind Ajax and individually, he couldn’t have done much more in the title race.

The Dutch wizard is certainly worthy of this award this term. Yes, his side didn’t win the league, but on a personal level, he enjoyed an incredible campaign.

In just 22 starts, Gakpo netted 12 goals and grabbed 13 assists in what was a breakout campaign for the 23-year-old.

Those figures were good enough for 10th and 2nd overall, respectively, and the wingers overall stats were simply outstanding.

Three shots per game, three dribbles per game and 2.6 key passes – Gakpo has proved an unstoppable creative force this season. He’s showing leadership, too, and at only 23, there’s massive potential in his game.

In fact, according to Dutch journalist Marco Timmer, Arsenal are in pole position to sign the winger this summer.

“An intermediate step on his way to the absolute top of European football seems to be his preference,” Timmer said.

“At the moment, Arsenal are in pole position, but nothing is definitive.

“PSV are aiming for at least forty million euros (around £33m).”

Our thoughts…

Signing the Eredivisie Player of the Year could be a shrewd move by Arsenal.

It is evidently clear the Gunners are in desperate need of more firepower in attack and the £22.5m-rated assist machine could provide the weaponry they require in abundance.

The Dutch wonderkid has been a revelation for Roger Schmidt’s men, possessing a WhoScored rating of 7.78 so far this campaign, the third-best in the Dutch top-flight, behind Luis Sinisterra (7.89) and Ajax’s Dusan Tadic (7.79).

Possessing sheer pace, acceleration, upper-body strength, vision and a pure threat in front of goal, the Dutch maestro would provide Arsenal with the added dynamism and attacking threat they desperately need to reach that next level.

Therefore, capturing Gakpo could potentially prove one of the signings of the summer.
