Granit Xhaka and Switzerland kicked off their World Cup in Qatar with a win against Cameroon on Thursday.

THE LOWDOWN: GOOD START

Switzerland kicked off their 2022 World Cup in Qatar with a hard-fought 1-0 win over African opposition Cameroon.

Captain of the side, Granit Xhaka, helped put the difficult opponents at bay in the keenly contest affair at the Al Janoub Stadium in Qatar on Thursday.

THE LATEST: HOW IT HAPPENED

Granit Xhaka captained Switzerland to a crucial 1-0 win over Cameroon in their opening 2022 World Cup.

In a game of two halves, the African side were the better team in the opening 45 minutes and carved out plenty of chances but Granit’s side kept them at bay and were able to get the game’s only goal shortly after the restart.

Xhaka was involved in the build-up, he made an excellent pass into attacking position, which led to Xherdan Shaqiri squaring for Breel Embolo to put the side ahead.

The Swiss held on for the win to stretch their unbeaten run to six games and take a huge step towards reaching the last-16 for the fourth time in the last five editions of the global showpiece.

They will face Brazil on Monday, November 28 before their final group stage game against Serbia on Friday, November 2.

THE VERDICT: IMPORTANT XHAKA

The Arsenal man was quite crucial again in a game of fine margin. He made a wonderful pass into the final third to set Shaqiri on his way before Emboli wrapped up the move.

He has now appeared in three world cups for the Swiss National team and will be keen to lead them out of the group into the second round once again.

Switzerland will fancy their chances of making it to the round of 16 and will no doubt need Xhaka as well as other players firing on all cylinders.
