Granit Xhaka has been named Switzerland’s footballer of the year 2022 for the second time in his career.

THE LOWDOWN: 2022 REJUVENATION

Having started in some disappointing fashion, Xhaka had a fantastic end to the year 2022 under Mikel Arteta.

He also featured at the World Cup in Qatar for Switzerland where he led to side to the round 16 before they were knocked out by Portugal.

In all, it was a rewarding year for him as he was a regular feature in Arsenal’s strong start to the Premier League season, playing in a more advanced role in Arteta’s set-up.

THE LATEST: GOOD FOR THE AWARD

Granit Xhaka has been named Switzerland’s male national team Player of the Year for 2022.

He featured in all 13 of his nation’s matches during the calendar year. In fact, he also played a stellar role in helping his side remain in the Nations League A, before heading to Qatar for the World Cup.

Granit picked up the trophy for the second time in his career in Bern on Monday night, having previously done so back in 2017.

Xhaka took to Instagram to show his thanks, saying:

“Very proud to be named Switzerland Player of the Year. Big thanks for the support – it really means a lot.”

THE VERDICT: WELL DESERVED

Having seen his career receive a major turnaround this past year, it was just appropriate to give him the award.

The midfielder has continued the same form this year and Arsenal fans will be hoping to see him maintain that form until the end of the season.
