Arsenal-focused journalist Charles Watts has issued an update on recent reports linking Santi Cazorla with a return to the club.

THE LOWDOWN: CONTINUED LINKS

Santi Cazorla needs no introduction among the Arsenal fanbase and his latest comments caused a stir after he hinted he could return to the Emirates stadium in some capacity.

At 37, his career is approaching its final stages and fans hoping to see the Spaniard on the pitch might be disappointed.

However, there are rumours suggesting he could join former Gunners teammate and compatriot Mikel Arteta in a coaching capacity at Arsenal. Charles Watt has weighed in on the matter and issued the latest development on the saga.

THE LATEST: FRESH UPDATE

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Watts said about Cazorla possibly returning to Arsenal: “It’ll be intriguing to see what Santi does when he hangs up his boots.

“I think we’d all love Santi to come back and be part of the coaching staff.

“He talks about [a] sporting director [role] there, I don’t think that’s going to happen at Arsenal because, well, Edu’s in place and you would think Edu’s probably going to stay for a while and see this project out, and Santi hasn’t ever done anything like that before, so I can’t imagine he’d walk straight into a sporting director job at Arsenal

“But coaching staff-wise, I mean, who knows? That relationship with Arteta’s there, and how great would that be, to see Santi come back and be part of the coaching staff?”

THE VERDICT: CAN HAPPEN

Cazorla was a fan favourite under Arsene Wenger and contributed to 74 goals across all competitions.

You would suspect that if Arteta felt confident in his coaching abilities, he would have no issue placing his former teammate among his backroom staff.

However, it may at least take a while to wait before that does happen, with the two-time EURO winner still competing in Qatar with his contract not up until the summer.
