Are Arsenal really just three signings away from winning the Premier League again?

Arsenal are very close to breaking through the glass ceiling of fourth place, but how soon? Arsenal’s last Premier League title came in 2004 under the dominance of the ‘Invincibles’, when the Gunners played a 38-game league campaign without being defeated. This ‘Invincible’ squad put Arsenal back on the map as a European powerhouse with the likes of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires, Patrick Vieira, Sol Campbell and a young Ashley Cole.

What is the current Arsenal squad missing? You guessed it… defence. The Gunners lack world-class defenders and most importantly – they lack leadership. A championship squad does not have simply one leader, but many. Yes, Thierry Henry was the face of the franchise during his legendary tenure with Arsenal, but the Invincibles had many leaders that all worked towards one common goal, the league title. Championship teams always have a great defence, and Arsenal will not win the title for another 10-years if they don’t fix their achilles heel, their back line. With the soon-to-be newly signed Gabriel Paulista, who will be wearing the number 5 on his kit, skipper Arsene Wenger looks to ease the BFG out of commission with the likes of a young Brazilian.

If our back line can go more than two-weeks without picking up an injury, Arsenal might have a chance to make a run at the league title that has eluded them for the last decade. Arsene Wenger has failed to sign any world-class defenders during January, so he must splash the cash during the summer for a solid defensive midfielder and an elite center back. Good additions during the summer would be Sami Khedira of Real Madrid, Mats Hummels of Borussia Dortmund, and possible Dani Alves of Barcelona. All three players are rumoured for an exit from their current clubs whilst being linked to north London. Arsenal will have to dig in for any chance at the title this year, but look for the trophy to come back to north London next year with the right signings during the summer.
