Nicholas Pepe stepped off the bench and nailed to free-kicks to rescue an unlikely victory for Arsenal.

The Frenchman who has by and large failed to impress so far following his £72m move to The Emirates finally announced himself to Gunners fans as Arsenal won 3-2 against Vitoria.

Unai Emery named a much changed side, but still left Mesut Ozil out of the squad for the fifth time in a row.

Arsenal lacked the German’s creativity and went behind eight minutes in when former Tottenham youngster Marcus Edwards cut inside and fired into the bottom corners to give Vitoria a shock lead.

Gabrielle Martinelli grabbed his fifth goal in six matches to equalise, but Arsenal found themselves 2-1 down just a few minutes later with Bruno Duarte restoring the visitors’ lead.

When Pepe came on in the 75th minute, things looked bleak for Emery’s side.

However, the winger stepped up scored back-to-back free kicks to relieve some pressure off of Unai Emery.

Arsenal top Group F on nine points. Vitoria stay pointless at the foot of the table.
