Arsenal have agreed a £26.4m deal to sign Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira.

The 22 year-old id have a £21.9m (€25m) release clause in his contract, which has another four years to run, but Arsenal offered the extra €5m to beat off competition from Napoli

He has become a key player at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris and is now ranked among the best defensive midfielders in Serie A. Torreira has one Uruguay cap and was included in Óscar Tabárez’s World Cup squad for the tournament in Russia this summer.

BBC Sports correspondent David Ornstein wrote on Twitter: “As widely reported Arsenal in talks to sign Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira. No agreement but central midfield a priority & 22yo Uruguay int’l seen as ideal fit technically + financially. also want a GK after defensive signings of Lichtsteiner & Sokratis (announced July)”

Arsenal are suggested to have a £50m budget this summer. If they secure the reported £16m deal for Sokratis, it would leave new boss Unai Emery just over £7m to play with.
