Arsenal return to European action this week but for the first time under Arsene Wenger it will not be in the Champions League, with the Gunners instead set to play on Thursday nights in the Europa League.

The disappointment of having failed to qualify for Europe’s elite competition last season will have been replaced in the summer by a desire to secure success, as Arsenal look to follow in Manchester United’s footsteps by winning the Europa League.

Arsenal have been handed a very manageable group against Red Star Belgrade, BATE Borisov and FC Koln, commencing their campaign this week against the German outfit who currently sit bottom of the Bundesliga.

Koln have lost all three of their league matches so far this season, scoring just one goal, and Arsenal are expected to compile the misery upon the German side- although Wenger has revealed he’ll make a number of changes- but he’ll still select a strong line-up.

Quoted by the club’s official website, Wenger said:

“It will be a Premier League team. Some players will come in of course, because many players played twice for the national team, and then again today. So two or three will not be in the squad, but most of them will play.”

That suggests the likes of Mesut Ozil and Laurent Koscielny may not travel, potentially handing an opening to the likes of Jack Wilshere and Calum Chambers.
