Arsene Wenger today commented on the recent transfer dealings of both Manchester clubs, saying he is impressed by their business but insists he was never after Raheem Sterling. Both United and City have dominated the headlines lately, with United announcing the double signing of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin having already captured Matteo Darmian and Memphis Depay.

City followed suit by agreeing a deal for Raheem Sterling from Liverpool, and although the boss admits these dealings are “interesting”, he insists his squad is already well stocked in those areas.

Speaking to Sky Sports after arriving in Singapore, Wenger had this to say:

“All these players are top-class players.”

“(But) on the offensive front we have many creative players, midfield as well. They are players I know well and like – Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger and Sterling. but offensively we have plenty of players.”

“For me Sterling is a top-class player. It’s a good buy for Man City. An expensive one, but they can afford it. Personally I like him.”

He continued.

“I didn’t make a bid because he plays in an area where we have plenty of players. We have Danny Welbeck, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Alexis Sanchez. Jack Wilshere can play there, Serge Gnabry.

“We knew Manchester United wouldn’t be happy with finishing outside the top three, they will respond. They have made some interesting signings.”

He concluded by hinting at further business for Arsenal this summer, and says the club is on the lookout for deals. Interesting remarks from the boss, and surely some that will be met with both understanding and scrutiny.

For gooners sake we hope the boss has something up his sleeve in response to these signings, as two of our main competitors have strengthened significantly.
