According to reports, Arsenal have struck early and are finalising a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

The 29 year-old centre-half has appeared 130 times in the Bundesliga since arriving from Werder Bremen in 2013.

Sokratis, who’s been capped 79 times by his country, has just one year remaining on his contract at the Westfalenstadion.

The Greek, previously linked with a move to Premier League rivals Manchester United, is understood to be valued at £17.5m by the German club.

Arsenal were particularly vulnerable at the back last season and it appears the club are keen to plug the leaks.

After conceding over 50 goals in the league, a number of first-team defenders could be shown the door even before the new manager is appointed.

The Metro claim head scout Sven Mislintat is lining up a replacement for Petr Cech. The former Borussia Dortmund scout is suggested to have identified Bayer Leverkusen’s Bernd Leno as a long-term replacement.
