Manchester United are closing in on finalising their deal for Benfica defender Victor Lindelof, which could give Arsenal the chance to land a big January deal, according to the Star.

Should the Red Devils get their man, England international Chris Smalling looks set to leave Old Trafford, with north London a possible destination.

Despite landing Germany international Shkodran Mustafi over the summer, Gunners manager Arsene Wenger still appears keen to bolster his defensive ranks.

Smalling, who has over 150 Premier League appearances to his name, as well as two winners medals, would be a ready-made January addition.

Whereas it is often a gamble to bring players into the club during the winter window, having to weigh up whether or not they will cope in England’s top flight, the former Fulham man is proven.

Regardless of form the 27-year-old has evident quality and would be a good addition to any Premier League side.

Wenger, however, will reportedly face competition from Premier League rivals Everton should Smalling become available.
