Arsenal could splash £50m on this one star

Try as he might, Arsene Wenger can’t keep Liverpool from speculating about the depth of his pockets. Despite the steep price tag, Liverpool expect Arsenal to launch a bid for striker Raheem Sterling later this week.

The Reds have given Sterling a £50m valuation, and so far have rejected the only offer that has come through, a bid of £25m with a further £5m in add-ons ventured by Manchester City.

Arsenal will know Liverpool don’t take bids below their valuation lightly (see John W. Henry’s reaction to the Suarez bid) and may be forced to meet the £50m price tag if they are to secure their man.

Sterling recently refused to sign a new  £100,000-a-week contract with Liverpool, and looks sure to leave Anfield. The only question is, how long will Brendan Rodgers and company hold out before cashing in?

Arsenal is a favorable landing place for Sterling, as the 20-year-old grew up in North London and could return home while playing Champions League football.

Meanwhile, Manuel Pellegrini has received full backing from the Manchester City chairman to go after his targets by any means necessary, and could present an obstacle to the Gunners in the fight for Sterling’s signature.
