Arsenal’s youthful and rotated squad put on a professional display at Vale Park, comfortably defeating Port Vale 2-0 in the third round of the EFL Cup. The victory, secured with minimal fuss, showcased the depth of Mikel Arteta’s squad and their ability to handle cup competition pressures.
Arteta made a staggering nine changes to the side that started the previous league match, bringing in a mix of seasoned professionals and promising youngsters. The new faces included Kepa Arrizabalaga, Cristhian Mosquera, Ben White, Christian Nørgaard, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Bukayo Saka, Ethan Nwaneri, Eberechi Eze, and Gabriel Martinelli.

They controlled the tempo with a relentless passing game. By the 25-minute mark, Arsenal had completed over 200 passes to Port Vale’s 25, a stark reflection of their complete control. Despite the statistical dominance, the vibrant Vale Park crowd remained behind their team, who were still only a goal down.
With the game in hand and a busy schedule ahead, Arteta used the second half to manage player minutes. Bukayo Saka, who had recently returned from injury, was given a well-deserved rest, coming off just after the hour mark. His replacement, the highly-touted youngster Max Dowman, was greeted by jubilant chants from the traveling Arsenal fans, who sang “He’s got school in the morning” and “Super Max Dowman.”
As the match wound down, the final blow to Port Vale’s hopes came in the 86th minute. Substitute Leandro Trossard sealed the win with a goal that effectively ended the contest and broke the hearts of the Vale faithful.
